Collaborative Web and Wikis
Collaborative technologies are generally web-based tools that involve two or more people working together in a virtual environment to create something greater than could be build independently.
Rather than simply viewing existing information, emphasis may be placed on authoring content. These environments can be mainly text-based or can also use audio, video, and animation. Wiki is a web based collaboration but there are many other collaborative tools such as shared documents, calendars, bookmarks, and spreadsheets.
Forums- boards.ie
A forum is a site or place where topics can be posted in order to discuss them with other people or members or a place where people post questions that others will attempt to answer. There are forum moderators who monitor the topics. Over time the forum will become a searchable resource for answers to questions about the forums range of topics.
Blogs- blog.com
Blog is short for Web Log and are for mainly personal use. It is like an online diary where a person posts text and pictures descibing their life, interests or work experiences. It's a place to post about your day and other activities. Some blogs are about different topics. Readers can usually leave comments about the post.
Wikis- Wikipedia and Wikia
A wiki is an information depository that is editable by those that view it and it is a type of website that uses "open editing" collaborative software technology to provide an easy way for multiple participants to enter, submit, manage, and update a single web workspace. Users make changes by selecting from options and filling in forms on a web page. Authorized users can add and delete links, pages, and content. In some cases, a moderator approves changes before they are posted. Some wikis also provide a way to track changes and view earlier versions of pages.
In short, Wiki is like an encyclopedia and wiki's are usually large communities posting to linear topics that dont really get discussed. Others will view the information and edit it if they feel it is wrong or needs clarification. You can find info about almost anything in a wiki.
