Web Authoring Web Authoring is the use of software that enables the user to develop a Web site in a desktop publishing format. The software will generate the required HTML coding for the layout of the Web pages based on what the user designs. Typically, the user can toggle back and forth between the graphical design and the HTML code and make changes to the Web page in either the design of the accompanying code.
The Advantages & Disadvantages of Using a Web-Authoring Application according to Luke Arthur at Demand Media When it comes to making your own website, some people choose to use a web-authoring application instead of relying on HTML or other programming languages. Such software, also known as a "what you see is what you get" or WYSIWYG editor, allows users to make webpages with a graphical interface like a word-processing program.
Advantages- Easy to use and saves time- A major advantages of a web-authoring application is its simplicity. Anyone with some basic technical skills can figure out how to make a webpage with this type of tool you don't have to spend time learning HTML or any other programming language to make a fully functional website. Instead, you basically point and click your way to creating a webpage.
Another benefit of using this type of application is that it can save you a substantial amount of time. With most WYSIWYG editors, you simply have to choose from a few different options when it comes to the items to put in your pages. You create some content and establish the layout and graphical elements of your page. If you were to do some of these things by hand-coding HTML, it would take much longer.
Disadvantages- Limited Options and reliance on the program- One of the potential problems with using a web-authoring application is that it limits your options as a designer. Usually, web authoring programs rely on templates, with limited options for the look of the site. Because of this, you may not be able to create a site that looks professional or original. Depending on the type of program, you may not be able to implement Flash, video or other common web-design elements.
Another problem with using web-authoring tools is that they make you completely reliant on them. Because of this, if the program suddenly becomes unavailable for some reason, you can't create a website. By comparison, if you know HTML, you can design webpages, regardless of what programs you have at your disposal -all you would need would be a text editor.
